Kosher Dill Crisps

I've just come across the weirdest thing ever: Kosher dill crisps.

Call me an ignorant goy (you'd probably be right), but doesn't Kosher have something to do with ritual slaughter? And if so, how do you ritually slaughter a garden herb?

Oh, my son!!! Don't you know that crisps are baked in fat and that that fat can come from non-kosher animals???? Highgate Woods has much to anser for!

What about Kosher salt then? The supermarket sells that too.

Allow me to explain: "Kosher Dill" refers to an item known as the kosher dill pickle. As Wikipedia elucidates: "A 'kosher' dill pickle is usually not kosher in the sense that it has been prepared under rabbinical supervision, which would ensure that no non-kosher ingredients were used, and that no utensil in contact with the pickles had ever been in contact with food that was not kosher. Rather, it is a pickle made in the traditional manner of Jewish New York City pickle makers, with generous addition of garlic to the brine."

You have so much to learn...

So let me get this straight: kosher dill chips/crisps contain flavours that make them taste *not* like dill or someting kosher, but rather gherkins pickled in a particular way by a particular religious community in a particular US city. Jeez! This is getting *far* too complicated for me. I think I'll stick to salt 'n' vinegar.

That seems wise. (see what I did there? ;)) But if you ever have the chance to sample a real NYC kosher dill pickle, you should. They're delicious!
